Penner weighs in on the one-year anniversary of the trade

Those just might be the least honest words to ever appear on MayorsManor.
Today marks the one-year anniversary of what's turned out to be one of the most disappointing trades in LA Kings history.
After struggling for long stretches in the first half of last season the team went on a hot streak in the month of February and GM Dean Lombardi swung big at the trade deadline, picking up the most coveted name on the market - Dustin Penner.
While Lombardi paid a steep price - prospect Colten Teubert, a first round draft pick last year and a third rounder this year - conventional wisdom, at the time, was it was a good trade. The Kings added a proven goal scorer (he had averaged 25+ goals the prior four seasons) and they didn't have to move anybody off of their current roster.
The fan sentiment around Penner today is far different than it was a year ago though.
With a goal vs. Vancouver, in just his second contest wearing a Kings uniform, he began a career-best six-game point streak. Pennermania was truly running wild in Los Angeles.
Since then, he has five goals and thirteen points, and most of the cheers have turned to boos.

These highlights from last night's Kings game vs. the Blackhawks feature clips of Jeff Carter, Jonathan Quick, Anze Kopitar, Jarret Stoll, Dustin Penner and several others. Yet, the night belonged to Dustin Brown.
After the game, I asked him which of the three goals were his favorite - "The first one. Stolly probably made the play happen. He skated all the way up the ice, drove the 'D' back. That gave me a little bit of room to cut to the middle and I just found a way to score."
On Friday, Brown sat down for a one-on-one interview with us where he opened up about how he was dealing with recent trade rumors. If you missed it, be sure to give it a read here.
On Saturday, he made the ultimate 'actions speak louder than words' statement.

Pennercakes - Full details on 'Pancakes with Penner' event
Are you ready to have pancakes with Dustin Penner?
Well, then mark your calendar for Monday, February 13th. The event will be hosted by the IHOP in Westchester, located just a few miles north of the Kings training facility in El Segundo.
As previously announced, tickets to this event will be awarded via a raffle, with all money raised being donated to the Kings Care Foundation. There are three different 'prize pack' options to chose from and 75 winners will be randomly selected next Thursday, February 9. Each winner will be allowed to bring one guest with them to the event.
Want more? Every person purchasing a raffle ticket gets a signed Dustin Penner player card. So, nobody is walking away empty handed here.

NHL12: The Mayor vs Penner and Johnson - results are in
In an article the other day, where we did mock All-Star Game drafts with several of the Kings, Dustin Penner wanted to know if the teams selected were going to be loaded into NHL12 to see who would win. Although that wasn't part of the plan, a longtime MayorsManor reader emailed to let us know he in fact did it. So, the results are available - with scoring summaries, goalie stats, video highlights and even the three-star selections...

ASG 2012: Johnson, Westgarth, Penner take on The Mayor
Later tonight, Daniel Alfredsson and Zdeno Chara will draft their All-Star teams from a group of 38 NHL players, live on TV. After watching the inaugural event last season, it definitely put a unique twist on things. No other sport does such a thing. And for a change, that's a good thing for the NHL.
By now, you've probably already read the mock draft we did with Alfredsson earlier this week. Here, we turn to a few of the Kings players.
First up, Jack Johnson. The rules in drafting our teams were simple. Jonathan Quick was ineligible and we alternated selections, with Johnson getting the first pick. Here's how it went down...

Penner claiming 'pancake power' and other notes from trip
Dustin Penner and pancakegate is turning into one of the longest running story lines of the season. Of course, everybody knows about the open letter he wrote here on MayorsManor (if you don't, where have you been?). And as the Kings made their way through Western Canada on their most recent road trip, it was a hot topic among fans, the media...and even among the home teams.
While he says he didn't hear the crowd chanting 'panckaes' at him every time he was on the ice in Edmonton, he did come home with a pre-game gift.
There was a report about an hour before the game that night that Penner was seen leaving the Oilers dressing room with a bottle of maple syrup - something thought to be a gift from one of his old teammates. However, Penner set the record straight for us...
"It was from Joey Moss (longtime Oilers dressing room attendant). He's very thoughtful. I did a lot for him when I was there and I think it was just his way of trying to repay what I did for him."
We've also received many tweets lately, with people wanting to know if he's had any more pancakes since the 'incident' a few weeks ago.
"Yes, I had pancakes the day we played the Canucks," Penner said. "And then I had eight hits that night. So...I think it was pancake power."
Well, those eight hits were a career high. So, yes, pancake power!
By the way, if you missed the post a few days ago - expect a major announcement early next week with all the details on the Pancakes with Penner event. Final logistics are being assembled and then the date, time and ticket information will all be revealed shortly. All of the money raised is expected to be donated to the Kings Care Foundation.

LA Kings GM Dean Lombardi on Penner and Pancakegate
Last night Dustin Penner offered an 'open letter' on MayorsManor to explain his side of what went down with his recent back injury and the surrounding media attention related to his eating of some 'delicious pancakes.'
That story has gone somewhat viral since, with references and links on the Edmonton Journal, Puck Daddy's Yahoo Sports blog, Canada's National Post newspaper, Spector's Hockey, Grantland, BusinessInsider.com and many more.
So, what does Kings GM Dean Lombardi think about all this? Here's what he had to say when asked just that by Mark Spector on his Edmonton-based radio show earlier today...
"When you're in this position and trying to manage your team to (become) a winner, I guess maybe it's not only the young kids that you have to put out some fires - [Lombardi was smiling and holding back laughter] there's a perfect example of all the things that can happen as you try to keep your team focused and get to where you want to go. You never know where it's coming from. But, he's made a lot of progress here and - actually - he's played pretty darn well here recently."
Funny off the ice, playing better on it. That's all well and good. Now, Penner is now looking to score some goals. Will he break through tonight? There's at least a good chance, as in the past he's told us that he gets up for playing the Stars - the team he made his NHL debut against back in 2005.

EXCLUSIVE - An open letter from Dustin Penner re: Pancakegate
As most of you know, Kings' left wing Dustin Penner has been a frequent guest on MayorsManor since arriving in Los Angeles last February. He's often brought a great sense of humor and insight to this site when talking about hockey and life in general. A lot has gone down though since he was a last minute scratch against the Columbus Blue Jackets this past Saturday. The following 'open letter' comes directly from the man himself...
So it seems as though I need to address Pancakegate for those in the sports media world, as well as those following #pennercakes on twitter, in light of the recent phenomenon I've created.
Right off the bat, I'd like to clarify a few things.
For example, they were vegetarian pancakes. The injury happened as I was sitting down to eat, not mid-bite. And yes, I did finish them.
There has been some feedback from the media as a whole regarding the lack of transparency involving injuries. So, I decided to be candid.
First and foremost, I think we can agree that having delicious pancakes that your wife made for breakfast, for a 1pm game, is not out of the norm. Secondly, "SOBS" (Sudden Onset Back Spasms) can occur at any moment, doing just about anything you can think of, and is a very serious issue.
Those who have experienced "SOBS," know it is no laughing matter. I'm a little hurt, to tell you the truth, that the plight of my people isn't being taken seriously.
Frankly, I don't mind the attention and there's no such thing as bad press, right? Apparently, I made it onto ESPN's 'Around the Horn' and joined Kings' ATH alumnus Dustin Brown (see water bottle incident) and have also became a twitter sensation overnight (with hashtag #pennercakes). So, I'm hoping to get an endorsement from IHOP or Denny's.
The main thing here though is that we were able to bring attention to a serious issue like "SOBS" and hopefully find a treatment and unmask the mystery of it all.
In closing, for those who know how to laugh and find humor in life I hope they've enjoyed this as much as I did.
In an effort to end the entire experience on a high note, I'm partnering with MayorsManor to sponsor a 'Pancakes with Penner' breakfast. In the weeks to come we'll be setting up a special raffle. Fans will be able to purchase tickets for $1.00 for a chance to have a pancake breakfast with me. All the money raised will go to charity...while we enjoy some delicious pancakes!

VIDEO: Coach Darryl Sutter's presser after 1-0 loss to CBJ
Coach Darryl Sutter suffered his first regulation loss since stepping behind the Kings' bench a few weeks ago, with a record of 5-1-3 after today's 1-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Sadly, his post-game presser was not filled with as many of his three-word answers as we've come to expect - little things of beauty, which are quickly becoming popular around these parts.
The best one today was 'Keep Bangin' Away' (when talking about what to do with the power play). Slightly re-phrasing one of his answers though, we could have 'Big Boy Goals' (on what's needed). Finally, it's a little too long to qualify as a three word answer - but, 'What Do Ya Do?' was another solid response.

First Goal Game - LA Kings players submit their guesses
For the past few seasons we've hosted a 'First Goal Game' contest on twitter and facebook for LA Kings home and road games. Each night, one random winner is selected from all correct entries and a prize is awarded - things like t-shirts, game tickets, etc.
At practice yesterday we asked a few of the Kings players who they would pick in the first goal contest. The question was simple enough - looking around the room, yourself included, which player will score first vs. the Coyotes?

Penner on coach Sutter wanting 'Mud with the Makeup'
Since Darryl Sutter took over the coaching reigns of the Kings, they've scored three or more goals in two of the seven games. That's an improvement from where they had been, having only done it twice in the fifteen games prior. However, they've also had three games with one goal or fewer. Yet, somehow, they're 4-0-3.
Yes, they're still struggling to score goals. But, with an undefeated record in regulation since he's arrived, something is different. Here's Dustin Penner's take on the situation...
"We scored four goals once. That was a big difference," the usually funny left winger began - before offering a more serious answer...
"He came in here and we pretty much kept everything the same. He may have put his own certain touches on it though. He's really a hands on coach. Not to say Terry wasn't hands on, in his own way. But, I've never seen a coach before Sutter come into the dressing room four minutes before we go on the ice and he's in there getting pumped up just like we are. He's a really good motivator."
What's the coach saying in a situation like that?

Four Kings play Word Association with Coyotes leaders
Three games into the Kings' six-game season series with the Coyotes it's been exactly what you'd expect from two division rivals - tight, close battles. They split a pair of games in October, with the Kings shutting out the Coyotes 2-0 in the first contest and losing 3-2 in a shootout a little over a week later.
Both those games were in Phoenix. Then, the day after Christmas, Staples Center hosted game three and the Kings won 4-3 - getting two goals from their defensemen (Rob Scuderi and Willie Mitchell), a rare site this year.

Jarret Stoll on his new linemates and their effectiveness
Center Jarret Stoll has been matched with just about every forward on the roster so far this season, except Anze Kopitar. He's seen duty at center, wing, on the second and third lines, and everywhere in between.
Lately though, he's had consistent linemates in Dustin Penner and Justin Williams. Here's what he had to say about things when asked about the line coach Darryl Sutter has kept together since taking over five games ago...
"It's been good. I think we have some chemistry going. Very few times we're in our own zone playing d-zone coverage. And that's what you want, you want to play the game in the offensive zone and try to create scoring chances and be buzzing, be hitting, getting loose pucks. I think we've been doing a good job at that. We just have to bare down a little bit more around the net and maybe get more shots. You can cycle all you want or try to control the puck down there all you want. But, if you don't get shots, it's really for not. That's probably what we have to be better at."
As for the match-up with Vancouver tonight - in 14 career games vs the Canucks, Williams has four goals...nine goals in 39 games for Stoll...and six goals in 32 games from Penner.

Dustin Penner reimagines the LA Kings as pro wrestlers
With the Kings in Toronto today to play the Maple Leafs it's only fitting that we work in a little pro wrestling. After all, the capital of Ontario, Canada is one of the strongest markets in North America for action inside the squared circle - including hosting WrestleMania VI (Hulk Hogan vs. the Ultimate Warrior) and WrestleMania X8 (Chris Jericho vs HHH and Hulk Hogan vs. the Rock).
Dustin Penner, who has long since been outed as a wrestling fan, subtly hinted at a possible heel turn himself a few weeks ago in an article here.
Now, he's back - this time to reimagine his teammates as pro wrestlers. Here's who he thinks some of the LA Kings could have been if they weren't hockey players...

Tonight will be the end of an era on at least two fronts.
First, interim coach John Stevens will be coaching his last game for the Kings - as Darryl Sutter is expected to be officially announced as the team's new bench boss tomorrow and resume game duties Thursday vs the Ducks.
Second, beginning next season, gone will be the days of the Kings and Maple Leafs only playing on rare occasion - as the NHL will feature a new balanced schedule, where each team will play a home and road game against the other 29 clubs.
For now though, Kings v Leafs is still something special. Not only is Toronto the undeniable hockey capital, but these two teams put on one of the greatest seven-game series in playoff history back in 1993. More on that in a minute though. First up, some notes on tonight...
- Slava Voynov and Alec Martinez will sit out, while Willie Mitchell is expected to return to the line-up. Yesterday, he proclaimed there were no further setbacks in his recovery from a sore groin and he's looking to be on the Kings blueline come game time.
- The same can't be said for Mike Richards. Although he's been traveling with the team since Friday, he's still not ready for contact. A better status of his situation should come later this week when the team is back in LA and he has a chance to see the doctor again.
- Don't look now, but Dustin Penner quietly had his first multi-point game of the season on Saturday. Of course, it went largely unnoticed due to the team losing 8-2. However, it's yet another positive sign of his recent play.
- "Flat-out mistakes that cost us goals," that's what Rob Scuderi had to say about the debacle in Detroit over the weekend.
- Look for Drew Doughty to have his best game of the season tonight. He'll be playing in front of friends and family and the young defenseman tends to raise his level of play in 'big games.' For him personally, this is a big one.
