Dustin Brown adds a new name to Penner vs Greene feud

Is he the funniest LA King? (photo by: C.Ikiri)
The debate raged all summer.

No, it wasn't who would be the starting goalie this year. Didn't Jonathan Quick end that argument last season?

It also wasn't which rookie would make the team - Brandon Kozun or Tyler Toffoli? Actually, that discussion may have gone on a bit longer had the Kings not signed Ethan Moreau in late August.

So, the undisputed topic de jour has been 'Which player on the LA Kings is the funniest?'

Many insiders had Matt Greene running away with the title for the last few years. Then, Dustin Penner showed up in February and the competition looked to be heating up again when he immediately challenged Greene to a ping pong contest, something Greene turned down and shrugged off.

In mid-June, things went a different direction when Greene offered up tattoos for his teammates - like, brass knuckles or a big wolf for Kyle Clifford...and a bald eagle right across Jack Johnson's chest.

Soon thereafter, Penner turned his attention to a wide variety of topics - including the NHL, shoe manufacturers, the Simpsons and much more (article linked here).

Then, Ethan Moreau wasted no time jumping into the mix either. Just days after joining the Kings, he insinuated neither of those two were funny at all. In fact, he alleges they stole his best material when they left Edmonton (article linked here).

By the time training camp opened up a few weeks later, Greene had heard enough. He offered an exclusive rebuttal here on MayorsManor, where he called out both guys - saying Moreau had been riding his coattails for years all while nursing Penner along at the same time (link).

Before those three sign on for a cage match at the next WWE pay-per-view though, let's get a fresh perspective on things.

First up, Jarret Stoll weighs in on which of the other former Oilers is the rightful owner of the crown - "That's tough to say. They're all different. Penner is the smart ass. Greenie can be dry, but very sarcastic. And Ethan, he brings it all to all the table. I'll go with Chop (Moreau's nickname). I'll give him the rank, he has the most games played. So, I'll give him the nod."

Moreau, now backing off of his earlier jabs, switched things up a bit and paid Greene some respect during a recent follow-up conversation - "Greener is in your face. He's the guy you want at your dinner party, a real funny dude. He brings a lot of energy and makes everybody laugh. But, Stolly and Pens are both witty guys as well. They're just a little more reserved than Greene."

Well, if the former Oilers are going to stick together and pass around compliments to each other, maybe it's only fitting the guys from New York back each other up as well.

"There are four or five really funny guys on the team. But, for my type of humor, it's Rob Scuderi," said Dustin Brown when asked who was the funniest LA King. "The thing is, nobody knows it. People upstairs and people who work for the team don't really know him that well. But, he's super sarcastic. When I travel to Staples Center he's one of my carpool guys too. So, I've gotten to know him real well. Great humor."

So, what does Scuderi think of Brown's comments?

"Um...I don't know," said the Stanley Cup winning defenseman. "We have a lot of good characters. It's a fun group. Whenever you have a good group of guys, it's easy to be funny. So, we definitely have some characters and hopefully I'm one of them."

Bringing things back full circle, Greene was also given a chance to respond to the new name Brown threw into the discussion.

"He could be. He definitely could be," Greene said, regarding the possibility of Scuderi being the funniest guy. "He's real dry, real subtle. You never really see it coming. I think that's the beauty of Scuds. Then he hides behind his family, so it's kind of hard to dig deep on him. You know, he gets in there quick and then he just goes home and you never see him for three days. So, it's tough to answer (him) back."

Ah yes, the old backhanded compliment.  Nice one Greener.

Don't worry, Dustin Penner also has a response to all of this.

We'll hear from him tomorrow.

Personally, I think there's a dark horse in all of this.

Then, file all of this in the 'to be continued' drawer.
