POLL: Who should the LA Kings honor next season?

It's been confirmed to MayorsManor that the LA Kings will keep the same jersey rotation for next year, including the purple (Forum blue) and gold version for three Legends Nights. As of now, the names haven't been finalized. However, a list of possible candidates is being pulled together. So, let's take a break from the playoff races for a moment and see what you guys think...

Over the course of 45 years, a lot of names have come through the organization. In an attempt to make things a little easier, we'll break this up into three eras. First up, we'll give you a list of pre-Gretzky stars (see below). In the next poll, we'll look at the 1988-2000 era (i.e. Kelly Hrudey, Marty McSorley, etc). Then, later in the week, we'll look at the Staples Center years (i.e. Ziggy Palffy, Ian Laperriere, etc.).

Most of the names on the list are obvious - such as Dave Taylor, who played more games in a Kings uniform (1,111) than any other player and has his number retired by the team. Yet, if you're not as familiar with some of the guys from the very early years, Brian Kilrea scored the very first goal in LA Kings history (something he talked about here). And Eddie Joyal was probably the first superstar hockey player in LA (discussed here).

Please select three people you think the Kings should honor next season:

POLL: LA Kings Player of the Week - 3.5.2012

It's Monday, so we're back with another edition of 'King of the Week' - a poll we run in conjunction with All the Kings Men podcast.

You can listen to this week's show in the player below, I cover the LA Kings' week that was and Buddy Oakes from Preds On The Glass checks in with a Nashville Predators report (the Kings next opponent). Plus, for added fun, everybody's favorite wisecracker The Royal Half also makes a guest appearance.

As discussed during the above podcast, here are the three Kings players nominated this week:

Jonathan Bernier - first star of the game vs Wild, shutout, 15 saves

Dustin Brown - two goals, two assists, plus-1, 10 hits

Jeff Carter - two goals, plus-1, nine shots on goal (including a team leading five SOG vs Anaheim)

Of course, if you don't like any of those choices, feel free to nominate your own...

Voting ends Wednesday night at 8pm PST.

POLL: LA Kings Player of the Week (w/e February 19)

Recently, we kicked off a 'Player of the Week' segment in conjunction with a regular appearance on All the Kings Men podcast. During this week's show we talk about the Kings' minor league affiliates in Manchester and Ontario, as well discussed the rookie call-ups and where the Kings should go from here with the roster.

You can listen to this week's episode at this link.

With only two games played between February 13-19 - and the Kings not getting goals in either - filling out the ballot for 'King of the Week' was challenging. However, in the podcast we reviewed why Mike Richards and Willie Mitchell deserve to be nominated. So be sure to give it a listen.

Here's a quick review of this week's candidates:

Jonathan Quick... two games played, only gave up one goal in each - posting a .948 save percentage in the process

Mike Richards - four shots on goal, four hits, seven penalty minutes - including a fight with a guy two feet taller than him

Willie Mitchell - stout defensive play

This poll closes at 8pm PST on Wednesday.

POLL: Who was the King of the Week (Feb 6-12)?

For the past few years we've run a 'Player of the Month' poll here on MayorsManor. Now, through the remainder of the season, we'll be publishing a poll for the 'King of the Week.' I'm scheduled to appear each Monday on the brand new All the Kings Men podcast, where we'll discuss the top Kings' performances from the prior week and narrow the field to three.

You can listen to this week's episode at this link.

As you'll hear, we're then looking for you to weigh in on who deserves the crown - so to speak.

The list of nominees for the week of February 6-12 are:

Jonathan Quick... record of 2-1-1 with a 1.89 goals-against average and .921 save percentage - also was the 2nd star vs Lightning and Islanders

Jordan Nolan... first NHL goal, in his second NHL game, was a game winner vs the Stars (also had five hits and was third star of the night) - plus, two hits and one takeaway vs. Islanders

Justin Williams... three points on the week - including one goal, one assist, plus-1 vs Stars

Poll ends Wednesday, February 15th at 8pm PST.

POLL: Who was the Kings Player of the Month for January?

With the All-Star break now behind us, it's time to look ahead towards February - when the Kings return to the ice tomorrow night vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, before we do, let's first open up the polls to determine who was the Kings Player of the Month for January.

Overall, the Kings went 5-2-4 in 11 games last month, including a 3-2-3 record at home and 2-0-1 on the road. As for individual stats, try these brain teasers out to get the juices flowing...

- Which King led the team in shots on goal? No, he wasn't a center. Justin Williams paced the team with 39 SOG, eight more than Koptiar.

- Which player on the second line had the most goals - Dustin Penner, Mike Richards or Jarret Stoll? None, or all, depending on how you look at it. They each had one goal. Penner led the way with 21 shots (and played one fewer game than his linemates).

- Kyle Clifford had the second most penalty minutes in January (30). Who had the most? Richards with 31. And who was third? Drew Doughty with 20. Not what you want to see from two of your best players.

OK, enough is enough. How about some nominees for the Kings' January Player of the Month...

Dustin Brown - tied for the team goal lead (4) and produced the most hits (41) in January

Drew Doughty - led all defensemen with six assists and was a team best plus-7

Jack Johnson - most goals by a defensemen (3) and only one back from the team lead, led all d-men in shots (26), had only four penalty minutes and a plus-1 rating

Anze Kopitar - tied for the team goal lead (4) and was second in points (9)

Jonathan Quick - started ten of the team's 11 games, posting a 4-2-4 record with one shutout and five games where he only gave up one goal - giving him a goals-against average well under 2.00

Justin Williams - Led the team in assists (7), points (10), power play goals (3) and shots (39), was also tied for second in goals (3), just one back of Brown and Kopitar

Poll closes Wednesday 2/1 at 5pm PST.

POLL: Which NHL forward would you take first at ASG?

If you've been following along here on MayorsManor this week, you've read the mini-mock drafts by Daniel Alfredsson, Jack Johnson, Dustin Penner and Kevin Westgarth. Now it's your turn. If you were one of the captains at this year's NHL All Star Game, who would you take with your first selection at tonight's All Star Fantasy Draft?

We'll assume in an offensive oriented game like the one to be played this Sunday, you're not about to waste your first pick on a goalie or even a defenseman. So, listed below are ten of the best forwards that will be available. You can select from the names provided or use any of these 14 guys as a write in vote: Jamie Benn, Logan Couture, Jordan Eberle, Marian Gaborik, Scott Hartnell, Marian Hossa, Phil Kessel, Milan Michalek, James Neal, Jason Pominville, Henrik Sedin, Tyler Seguin, Jason Spezza or John Tavares.

POLL: LA Kings Player of the Month - December 2011

Last December, Dustin Brown was voted the Kings' Player of the Month - topping Anze Kopitar and Jonathan Quick in the voting.  This time around, two of those three will almost surly be the two vote-getters and Brown may even repeat as winner. We shall see.

Overall, the team went 7-6-2, which isn't that dissimilar to their 6-5-2 record in November.  However, it was really the tale of two halves, as the Kings were 5-0-2 in the final seven games of December. Oh, and after beating the Canucks on New Year's Eve, they found themselves in first place in the Pacific Division.

As for individual performances, here's an overview of the most worthy candidates from last month - listed in alphabetical order...

Dustin Brown - five goals, three game-winning goals, led the team in hits (73) and shots on goal (63)

Drew Doughty - led all defensemen in points with eight assists, including six helpers during a personal best five game points streak in late December and led the team in minutes played nearly every game

Jonathan Quick - posted a 7-4-1 record with one shutout, including going 5-0-1 in his last six games with a 1.44 GAA and .951 save percentage

POLL: Who should be the next LA Kings head coach?

Early this morning we looked at a list of possible candidates for the Kings head coaching position - from pro coaches to guys in junior hockey.

You may want to review that list before answering the following question (link).

For now, Kings GM Dean Lombardi says assistant coach John Stevens will fill the role on interim basis. On this afternoon's conference call, Lombardi was reluctant to say how long Stevens will hold the position or if he's being considered for the full-time role - only that the team has a 'short list' they're working off of.

So, with that that said, which of the following candidates, would you hire to lead the Kings if you were in charge? (note: the list randomly displays with each new visitor to the website, so the order is not meant to imply anything in terms of preference or priority)

POLL: LA Kings Player of the Month - November 2011

Time for some more house cleaning. Sure, this poll should have gone up on Thursday morning. Life happens. And yes, this poll is for the month of November. So, it does not take into account anything that occurred Thursday night vs. Florida or Saturday afternoon vs. Montreal.

Here we go...

First, a look back at the team as a whole. In the month of November, the Kings were 6-5-2, a little worse off than their 6-3-2 record in October. Their 28 points were second best in the division (behind Dallas, 29) and placed them sixth in the Western Conference. LA is also 6-1-2 vs. Pacific division opponents.

The power play, which had been converting at 23.1% in October, had fallen to 17.4% at the end of the NHL's second month. On the penalty kill, things had dropped a few points as well, going from 86.1% down to 84.4%.

Individually, here are your nominations for Player of the Month, November 2011:

{listed in alphabetical order)

Simon Gagne - four goals, four assists

Anze Kopitar - four goals, six assists, still leads the team in points

Jonathan Quick - 4-5-2 record, .924 save percentage, one shutout

Mike Richards - nine goals, one assist, moved into team goal scoring lead

Slava Voynov - one goal, one assist, 10 shots on goal in seven games since being called up

Who gets your vote?

Vote now, poll ends Wednesday morning at 11am PST.

For the record, last month's winner was Jonathan Quick. He captured 63% of the votes, the most ever in one of our 'Player of the Month' polls. Full results are available here.

POLL: What's the right roster move for the LA Kings?

As reported yesterday, Dustin Penner is set to return to the Kings line-up this Thursday. In order for that to happen though, the team needs to make a roster move to create a slot for him.

If you were the Kings GM, which of the following moves would you make?

To answer the question properly, first assume a few things... Penner isn't getting traded and/or waived, Bobby Ryan isn't moving across town to Staples Center and all other trades are temporarily off the table. Thus, one of the options below is what 'you' and your Kings management team are trying to reach consensus on.

For those unfamiliar with the finer points of the decision, some players can be sent to Manchester without a problem (i.e. usually younger players, with fewer games played in the NHL - like Andrei Loktionov). Others, usually more experienced players, would first have to be placed on 'waivers,' allowing another NHL team to claim them - which would also free up cap space for the Kings. If the waived player isn't taken by any other team, he can then be assigned to Manchester.

Weighing all options, which one is the right move?

Poll closes at noon on Tuesday or when the final decision is announced by the team.

POLL: LA Kings Player of the Month - October 2011

Through the first month of the season, and a total of 11 games played, the Kings have compiled a 6-3-2. They sit second in the Pacific Division and fourth in the Western Conference standings. They've also allowed the second fewest goals (22), as only Edmonton is better (letting in just 18).

Taking a look at a few other stats - the rank 23rd in goals scored per game (2.36), the power play is converting 23.1% of the time (fourth best in the NHL) and the penalty kill is ranked ninth (86.1%).

Their recent numbers in the faceoff circle have helped push their season average up to 49.1% (now 18th out of of 30 teams). Last year they finished 10th best with, winning 51.1% of draws taken.

How about the individual players? Here are your nominations for Player of the Month, October 2011.

{listed in alphabetical order)

Dustin Brown - three goals, six assists, led the team with 32 shots

Jack Johnson - three goals, two assists, plus-2, Mr. Overtime

Anze Kopitar - six goals, eight assists, leads the team in points

Jonathan Quick - 1.52 goals against, .947 save percentage, three shutouts

Mike Richards - two goals, eight assists

POLL: Did coach Murray make the right call on Bernier?

The lively debate continues among LA Kings fans - who should start in goal?

Coming into this season, coach Terry Murray said he would ride the 'hot hand,' rather than follow a penciled in schedule. Which is part of the reason today's announcement caught some people off guard, Jonathan Bernier will be in goal Tuesday night vs. the Devils.

With four games scheduled this week, including back-to-back games on Saturday (at Phoenix) and Sunday (at Colorado), how would you have set up the goaltending rotation?

Would Jonathan Quick, coming off three straight shutouts, get the call again tomorrow night? Would Bernier play against Phoenix on Thursday?  Or possibly over the weekend?

Pretend you were the head coach for a minute and select your answer from the options below.

POLL: Quick or Bernier vs. New Jersey and Philadelphia?

The impending goaltending battle in Los Angeles has been well documented.

It's supposedly been imminent for over a year now.

However, last season could be best summed up like this...

Jonathan Bernier entered the year with high hopes, came out of the gates slow, admitted that he didn't feel comfortable in the crease until after Christmas and then played lights out hockey when given the chance in the second half, including going 4-0-1 in March with two shutouts. The Kings also picked up a point in Bernier's final nine starts of the regular season. He didn't see the ice for a single minute in the playoffs.

On the other hand, Jonathan Quick won at least 35 games for the second straight season, while posting a 2.24 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage.

During training camp, coach Terry Murray said he'll be going with the hot hand this year - rather than following a penciled-in schedule, like he did most of last season.

For the Kings opening weekend, Murray went with Quick in game one (where the Kings downed the Rangers in overtime 3-2) and Bernier got the nod vs. Buffalo on Saturday (a 4-2 loss for LA).

Taking all of the above into account, plus the fact the Kings could possibly still be jet lagged from the trip to Europe (Quick even tweeted as much yesterday), what should Murray do with the next two games?

The Kings are scheduled to play the Devils in New Jersey on Thursday night and then take on the Flyers in Philadelphia on Saturday.

Poll closes Wednesday at 6pm PST.

POLL: Where will the LA Kings finish in the standings?

The Los Angeles Kings last played a game in April.

You've had all summer to contemplate how the additions of Mike Richards, Simon Gagne and others will impact the team's offense.  Plus, the last month has provided multiple looks at the revamped Kings, via eight different pre-season games.

And earlier this week, predictions for the 2011-12 NHL season were posted here on MayorsManor.

POLL: What should the LA Kings do with Scott Parse?

Last night in Colorado, Kings forward Scott Parse recorded his first point of the pre-season.

However, just a few days ago, coach Terry Murray said he wasn't necessarily looking for goals or assists out of the 27-year old winger right now. Instead, he wanted to see his feet moving - something Murray claimed has been lacking.

While a dozen or so players have been fighting for one of the few roster spots available on the Kings team this season, Murray practically gave Parse a job heading into camp - even saying he planned for him to be part of the line-up during every pre-season game, in an effort to let him get back into game shape after missing most of last season.

As of Monday, Parse had yet to 'grab the opporuntiy' according to Murray, which led to a subsequent sit down meeting and him being scratched from Tuesday's game in Kansas City.

With guys like Ethan Moreau, Brad Richarson, Trevor Lewis, Andrei Loktionov and others all pushing for a spot on the Kings third and fourth lines, time may be running out for Parse.

Or is it?

If you were in charge of the Kings, what would you do...

POLL: Which rookie helped his cause the most?

Some will say, 'oh, it was only an exhibition game!'

Well, first off, you should reply and say, 'actually it was two exhibition games.' Then, follow it up with, 'they mean a lot to the rookies trying to earn a spot in the NHL.'

Coming into camp, it looked like the only real roster competition would be among the forwards - with Tyler Toffoli and Andrei Loktionov being among the top names under consideration.

Additionally, with Drew Doughty still not signed, coach Terry Murray is having to take a longer than expected look at several of the team's defensive prospects.

All said, which rookie do you think helped his case the most last night?

POLL: When will Drew Doughty re-sign with the LA Kings?

Last week, when I was interviewed on FAN 960 in Calgary, the topic they wanted to discuss most was the Drew Doughty contract situation (listen here).

With news of other Kings moves starting to die down a bit - i.e. trade for Mike Richards, signing of Simon Gagne, summer Development Camp, etc. - Doughty's contract negotiations have been moved to the front burner and will likely be discussed quite a bit until both parties reach an agreement.

POLL: How should NHL resolve Kings-Oliers grievance?

Poor Gary Bettman. The guy gets booed everywhere he goes.

He rarely gets complimented for anything he does, at least not by fans.

And he finds himself in another lose-lose situation after the Los Angeles Kings officially filed a grievance against the Edmonton Oilers.

Regardless of how he resolves the mess, some percentage of people on the opposite side will complain he treated their team unfairly.

I'm sure that annual salary that's north of $7 million will help him sleep at night though. Being the most hated man in hockey does have its price.

So, what's at stake here? Essentially, the Kings feel the Oilers were deceitful, not once - but twice! In re-acquiring Ryan Smyth, they first tried to give the Kings Gilbert Brule - who was injured. The deal was finally consummated when they replaced him with Colin Fraser in the deal. Soon thereafter, it was discovered Fraser had a fairly significant ankle injury.  Thus began the war of words...err, difference of opinion...between Kings GM Dean Lombardi and his Oilers counterpart, Steve Tambellini.

That's the gist of things. Helene Elliott of the LA Times had more details on the story here.

And Colin Fraser had an exclusive interview with MayorsManor here.

Now, for the tough question. If you were Commissioner Bettman, how would you resolve the case?

Poll closes Tuesday at noon.
