Win a 4-pack of tickets to Kings Alumni and Ontario Reign

This Saturday, the Ontario Reign and the Kings Alumni Association are teaming up for a special double header...and we have 20 tickets to giveaway!

At 3pm a team of Kings Alumni will skate in a special game vs. a group of local players. [UPDATE: The roster is scheduled to include Valeri Bure, Brandon Convery, Mark Hardy, Brad Norton, Jamie Storr, Ian Turnbull, J.F. Jomphe and Matt Kopitar - father of Kings center Anze Kopitar. Glen Murray will serve as the coach of the team.]

Then, at 6pm, the Ontario Reign will take on the Colorado Eagles. Of course, Hardy is now the assistant coach for the Reign, and Kings' goaltending prospect JF Berube is the team's number one netminder this season. As a special bonus, the Reign will be wearing a Kings themed jersey for the game.

Some of the Kings Alumni will be signing autographs during intermission of the Reign game.

If you'd like to win a 4-pack of some prime tickets - located in the 'wrap around attack' section of the lower bowl, valued at $23 each - simply send an email to ticketcontest@MayorsManor.com - all entries must include your name, address and phone number.

Good luck, we'll announce the winners on Friday morning.

...And Now You're Caught Up - April 4, 2011

Opening weekend of Major League Baseball, the Final Four, WrestleMania, a Kings game, the Stars-Ducks game and the list goes on - it was a busy sports weekend for some of you.

So, here are the top ten Kings-related stories you need to know about or may have missed...

* Defenseman Willie Mitchell has been selected as the Kings’ nominee for the 2011 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy - awarded annually to the player who best exhibits perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to ice hockey (press release). A Kings player has won the award three times previously, Butch Goring 1978, Bob Bourne 1988 and Dave Taylor 1991.

* If you want to relive the Mike Ribeiro Hit On Michal Handzus from Saturday's Stars-Kings game, video is available here.

* Jonathan Bernier's stellar 4-0-1 record in the month of March, including two shutouts, weren't enough to win him Player of the Month honors. Fans instead voted Dustin Brown the winner for the second time this season. See the full results for March and list of all winners this season at this link.

Mark Hardy on Kings Defense and Power Play

In some ways, perhaps the thing Mark Hardy knows best is the Kings defense.

He was drafted by LA in 1979, patrolled the team's blue line for 616 games (third most in franchise history) and spent ten years coaching Kings players following his retirement.

For the last year though he's been on the sidelines, having resigned his position after being arrested in Washington, D.C. and subsequently entering an alcohol treatment program.

Last night he skated in a charity game along side fellow Kings' alum Luc Robitaille and Marty McSorley - his teammates during their run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1993.

Afterwards, I spoke with him about what he's been up to and what's next for him. The conversation wouldn't best be presented in written form. You'll want to hear it from him, rather than read it. So, he's agreed to come on the MayorsManor podcast later this week (available here).

However, I wanted to pass along his thoughts on this year's team, namely the defense and power play...

MM:  How tough has it been to watch the games this year?

MH:  You know what, I like to cheer on the guys that I've coached. I was in Chicago for two years. I still like to watch them and on cheer on the guys who I know. Obviously, working with the 'D' on the Kings last year, I miss doing that. I think when it's in you, you never know how much you're going to miss the game until you're out of it. Right now, it's been very, very tough. I knew I needed to heal and now I'm just looking forward to whatever is going to happen next in my life. I take a positive attitude, I make sure I'm sober and I believe that things are going to be good for me.
